Cultured Pearl Jewelry

Not only is pearl jewelry a tradition in many families, it’s also a classic jewelry choice. Every woman should own jewelry with pearls! Cultured Pearls make for an elegant choice and are suitable for many special occasions. From proms, weddings and formals to business events, interviews and casual functions, pearls just glow with class and offer a professional look. Pearls are also the birthstone for June, making a thoughtful birthday gift. Classy and modern, pearls add a touch of style to your spring look, summer poolside conversations and brunches.

Consider a gift such as a radiant Cultured Pearl necklace for the holidays and for your anniversary. Most commonly, pearls are a 30th wedding anniversary gift but they make a great gift at any time of the year. Also, consider pearls for a mother who has a June baby, for your bridesmaids, mother-in-law and graduation gifts. A romantic trend for 2020, pearls make a beautiful engagement and promise ring. With their creamy, lustrous texture and iridescence, pearls shine in their own unique way–just like you.

Before culturing became standard, people discovered pearls haphazardly by fishing for oysters and other mollusks. This makes natural pearls extraordinarily rare; only one in ten thousand oysters will create a pearl on its own. Almost all natural pearls on the market today are vintage pearls and, due to their rarity, are expensive. When buying a natural pearl, make certain it comes with an official gemological x-ray certificate to prove it's natural.

However, Cultured Pearls are available in many styles, ranging from nostalgic to modern. A beautiful choice for bridal gifts or just because gifts for the one you love, Cultured Pearl jewelry radiates classic style.

What is a Cultured Pearl?

It is rare to find non-cultured pearls in the public marketplace. Did you know pearls are made up of layers of nacre produced within mollusk shells? Because pearls are so seldom found in nature, there is also a system to produce what is known as cultured pearls. Tiny irritants are inserted inside the mollusk shell. As the nacre builds around the irritants over time, beautiful pearls are created. Almost all pearls you find in stores today are cultured.

Where do Cultured Pearls come from?

Natural and Cultured Pearls both come from live mollusks and are not artificially created. Cultured pearls come from mollusks that are bred and tended to by farmers in order to create pearls for harvest. Natural pearls are the result of no intention or assistance by humans, but only the phenomenon of the mollusk's normal processes.

What are the different types of pearls?

The many types of pearls include Freshwater, South Sea, Tahitian and Akoya Cultured Pearls. Freshwater Cultured Pearls are the most plentiful and therefore the most affordable of all Cultured Pearls. South Sea Cultured Pearls are farmed primarily from oysters found in Australia and the Philippines. These pearls are highly valued for their size and glowing appearance. Tahitian Pearls are known for their distinct black color with hints of pink, purple, blue and green in their sheen. People often describe the look of Akoya Pearls as uniquely beautiful and exotic. Famous for their sheen, Akoya Pearls are also prized for their color and creamy luster. Classic white or cream are the most common colors, but you're also likely to find overtones of rose, silver or ivory.

How to clean pearl jewelry

We recommend you gently wipe your pearls with a dry, soft cloth after every wear. If your pearls are visibly stained, we recommend mixing lukewarm water and mild dish soap together, then dipping a soft cleaning cloth into the mixture and gently wiping each pearl. Please, do not submerge your pearls and let them dry entirely before storing. We also recommend taking your pearls to your jeweler once a year to ensure safe cleaning.
