All About Birth Stones: December

Blue topaz is the traditional birthstone for December, but tanzanite and turquoise are considered alternatives.

Blue Topaz - The Basics
While topaz can be found in a spectrum of colors, blue is the only kind associated with December. The word topaz comes from the Sanskrit word for fire, a name inspired by the brilliant intensity of the gem. Topaz is cherished by a number of cultures, including the Hindus, who consider the topaz extremely sacred.

Topaz is known to represent creativity and thought to have the power to enhance one's imaginative thinking and artistic ability. An overall sense of well-being and good health are also thought to be brought about by topaz. Additionally, topaz is thought to balance emotions and calm fears and anxieties.

Tanzanite - The Basics
Discovered as recently as 1967, tanzanite is a purplish blue gemstone from the zoisite family. There is only one source of tanzanite - the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. While sometimes a similar hue to sapphire, this gem often contains purple tones of varying depth.

Tanzanite represents individuality and the power to not be influenced by others. It is also believed to have a calming effect and provides an overall sense of positivity and well-being.

Blue topaz and tanzanite should be cleaned with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not use steam or ultrasound for cleaning.
