Debutante balls, sometimes called cotillions or coming out parties, have a long history. Once seen as a "debut" for a young woman who was available for marriage, their purpose today is to uphold tradition, raise money for charity, and, of course, celebrate a young woman becoming an adult. A common age for a debutante is anywhere from 16 to 18. Similarly, the Philippine Debut marks a girl's 18th birthday. This occasion is comparable to a Sweet 16 or quinceañera.
