Initially, women wore wristwatches more than men. In 1914, as soldiers were preparing for World War I, they were issued wristwatches. These watches proved to be more mobile and less expensive than pocket watches. They were also an important part of strategy. American soldiers used their watches to synchronize the timing of their attacks. Once the war was over, soldiers continued to wear wristwatches and society quickly followed.
